Is Apple planning 24 iPad mini SKUs

first_imgIt was just yesterday that a leaked inventory listing spilled details about the iPad mini, including storage capacities, colors, and connectivity options. Today, a new rumor has cropped up that has Apple planning to unleash a total of 24 different iPad mini variants in the coming months. That’s twice as many as the 8.9-inch iPad.So why so many SKUs? The original German leak showed that like the iPad, the iPad mini would be available in both black and white. However, the entry-level configuration was shown with just 8GB of internal storage. The iPad and iPhone 5 start things off at 16GB, and that difference adds two more iPad mini models for each color — and for both Wi-Fi and 3G models. But now it’s claimed that Apple maybe be offering up a separate model with 4G LTE support. If that’s true, that’s an additional 8 SKUs.That’s an awful lot of options for consumers to choose from, and it’s not typical behavior for Apple any more. It seems strange that the company would make customers choose not only between Wi-Fi and cellular when purchasing an iPad mini, but also between 3G and 4G. And does it make sense to start things off at 8GB, at a time when the iPad and iPhone 5 offer twice that — and the iPod touch now sports a minimum of 32GB?Amazon learned its lesson with the Kindle Fire, and is only offering the HD with 16GB or 32GB. CEO Jeff Bezos has said that 8GB is just too little storage for a tablet that’s built for HD content, which the iPad mini almost certainly will be. Would Apple really offer up a Retina tablet (even a scaled-down one) with only 8GB? When you knock off the space consumed by iOS 6, users would already be down to 6.5-7GB before installing a single app.The question, then, is whether these inventory listing leaks are actually based on information retailers have received from Apple or just placeholders.More at Apple Insiderlast_img read more
