While at the Indiana State Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet for the induction of Angie Menser, I met Reggie Allen who was also inducted this year. Reggie, a native of Monessen, Pennsylvania, was a quarterback for the Sycamores who graduated in 1981. Despite his small size, he started 4 years for the Sycamores and was the 1979 Missouri Valley Offensive Player of the Year. He still holds many passing and career offensive records for Indiana State. While talking to Reggie at breakfast the next morning, we learned that he has a daughter (Charel) who played basketball for Notre Dame from 2004-08. She was a guard for the Irish and scored over 1,500 points in her career. After graduating from Notre Dame, Charel was selected by the Sacramento Monarchs of the WNBA. After playing for the Monarchs, she then took her basketball skills to the pro league in Belgium. Coincidently, this is same country that Colt Ryan of Batesville played pro basketball in last year. This goes to show how small our world is. You can sit down to visit with a total stranger and still find a connection!! Reggie was wonderful to talk to, and without my connection to sports, we would have never met.
