first_imgPopular Jamaican entertainer Buju Banton (Mark Myrie) was released from the McRae Correctional Facility in Georgia, United States yesterday after serving an eight year sentence on drug charges.According To Ronnie Davies, an avowed South Florida fan of Buju. “Is like Nelson Mandela free all over again back in South Florida. Yes, Dread!. Buju free! Buju free!”That sentiment as expressed by Davies trended on social media all Friday afternoon as news of Buju’s release spread. People, in tweets, Facebook and Instagram postings, thanked God for his release, and wished him well, hoping he quickly resumes the successful singing career he enjoyed before he was charged and imprisoned in 2010.Following Buju’s release speculation raged as to where his destination would be. Jamaicans wanted to know when he would be returning to his homeland. That answer came later o Friday evening as word came he was heading for Jamaica to arrive later that evening.At around 8:00 pm a video appeared on social media showing Buju clandestinely boarding an aircraft somewhere in the US. On the video, the tall, lanky entertainer dressed in a white sweater and a white tam walked energetically and appeared in good shape.At approximately 9:30 pm another video was posted showing Buju arriving at the Norman Manley Airport in Kingston. Walking across the tarmac, again looking fit, healthy and smiling, with his beard showing patches of grey, he was enthusiastically greeted by airport staff, and this continued when he entered the custom hall. Workers shouted, “Welcome home Buju” and some rushed, and were successful, in having their pictures taken with the entertainer.However, a crowd of his fans who received word of his pending arrival and gathered outside the passenger arrival exit at the terminal, expecting to give their entertainment idol a warm Jamaican welcome were disappointed. Instead of exiting from the arrival terminal as most passengers do, Buju was whisked away secretly from the cargo exit.Buju’s release has been highly anticipated since it was announced months ago that he would be released on December 8, some three months earlier that his schedule 2019 release.Now that he is back home, Jamaicans, and Buju’s fans globally are waiting to learn when the entertainer will return to the stage for his first show asd a free man, and his first in some nine years.last_img
