Ja’s women delighted with championship record

first_img “We knew we had a solid team so it was all about arranging the team the right way. We went out as a team, we did wonderfully. I don’t think we could ask for anything else,” added Fraser-Pryce, who also commented on Jamaica’s win in the men’s 4x100m. Only Beverly McDonald, with six, has won more medals in the 4x100m at the World Championships, while this was Jamaica’s 13th medal in this event at the World Championships. Campbell-Brown was also thankful for the result. “I think it was good. We are happy for the result. This is my second time running the first leg. I ran it way back while competing at the World Junior Championships a long time ago. It felt okay. The objective was to come out here, get the baton around, and ensure we got the win,” said Campbell-Brown, who played down her leg and applauded Morrison’s and Thompson’s efforts. –  André Lowe SOLID TEAM BEIJING, China: Jamaica’s women went into their 4x100m final at the IAAF World Championships yesterday hunting the world record, but are certainly not complaining about what they left with – another gold medal and the fastest time ever recorded at the event. After a bullet-start from Veronica Campbell-Brown, who was starting a relay for the first time since the 2000 World Junior Championships in Santiago Chile, the Jamaicans consolidated in the middle legs with youngsters Natasha Morrison and Elaine Thompson holding the advantage before releasing Fraser-Pryce on anchor. The 100m gold medallist raced across the line in 41.07 seconds, two hundredths of a second faster than the old championships record that they themselves set at the last installment of the championships in Moscow, Russia. The United States were second in 41.68, while Trinidad and Tobago claimed their first medal in this event in 42.03 – a national record. “I feel good! We ran a championship record and it’s just wonderful that we came out here as a team and were able to accomplish this. We are really excited! Yes! We thought about the world record but it didn’t happen. Maybe next time; however, we are satisfied with what we got tonight and look forward to more,” said Fraser-Pryce.last_img read more

Charlie set to go on goal spree

first_img Today’s games Group A St Catherine vs Calabar Clan Carthy vs Tivoli Group D Charlie Smith vs Penwood St Andrew Technical vs St Mary’s College Group E St Jago vs Wolmer’s Kingston High vs Mona Group G Kingston College vs Jose Marti Waterford vs Campion College (Home teams named first and all games start at 3:30 p.m.) Charlie Smith High will look to maintain their perfect run when they face lowly Penwood High in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW Manning Cup Group D, today at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, starting at 3:30 p.m. The Charlie Smith team has won all four games in the first phase and will now start the return round. Having beaten Penwood 5-0 in the first game, ‘Charlie’ should have little problem in winning at home today. A win for Charlie would push them a step closer to the next stage, and they are fully aware of that. Charlie Smith lead the group on 12 points from four games ahead of Holy Trinity (8), St Andrew Technical (7), St Mary’s College (7) and Penwood – without a point. Coach of Charlie Smith Jerome Waite said his team would be looking to notch another victory. “Well, the game means a lot as winning would put us one step away from a spot in the second round,” Waite told The Gleaner yesterday. “Making the next round is the test for the team to see where we are. The team is not playing badly, but decision-making and other things need to improve,” the veteran coach who guided Charlie Smith to the final last year said. In another crucial game today, Calabar High, lying in second position on eight points, travel away to third-place St Catherine (7). Jamaica College, who are idle, lead Group A with 13 points from five games.last_img read more

Sensational beaver-trick for Santokie in losing cause

first_imgSHARJAH, United Arab Emirates, (CMC):Not even a sensational beaver-trick by former Jamaica and West Indies left-arm seamer Krishmar Santokie could prevent Gemini Arabians from pulling off a 12-run victory over Sagittarius Strikers in the Masters Champions League here yesterday. The 31-year-old, who played the last of his 12 Twenty20 Internationals two years ago, grabbed four consecutive wickets off the first four balls of the final over to help restrict a rampant Arabians to 224 for seven off their 20 overs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.Opting to bat first, Arabians were propelled by Indian opener Virender Sehwag who belted 134 off 63 balls, with ten fours and 11 sixes. He put on 86 for the first wicket with South African Jacques Rudolph who hit 27 and a further 135 for the second wicket with Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara who scored 51 from 33 deliveries.Recently retired West Indies left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul was unbeaten on one from two deliveries at the end.SUPERB OVERSSantokie, who had taken one wicket in an earlier spell, finished with five for 30 in a superb four-over spell to be the leading bowler for Strikers. He bowled Sangakkara with the first ball of the over and then proceeded to remove Brad Hodge, Justin Kemp and Naved-ul-Hasan all without scoring, while conceding just one run from the final over of the innings. In reply, Imran Farhat stroked 52 from 32 deliveries, Yasir Hameed, 41 from 22 balls with a four and four sixes and Yasir Arafat a 16-ball 32 with four sixes, but Strikers still slumped to 177 for nine in the 18th over. However, Santokie arrived to smash an unbeaten 23 from nine balls with three sixes in a 35-run, last wicket stand with Shane Bond who got 12 not out, as Strikers came up short in the end.last_img read more

Competitive UP good for UAAP

first_imgWe’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Having a competitive University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons basketball team is good for the school and the UAAP.The State University has a lot on its hands to think about and work on and it’s understandable when it hasn’t been able to stay in step with the current powers of the league. This is not to say that UP has been remiss in supporting college athletics as a vital part of student formation.
