Proposed Particle Help Explains Odd Galactic Photons

first_img Explore further Citation: Proposed Particle Help Explains Odd Galactic Photons (2008, July 25) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2008-07-particle-odd-galactic-photons.html In 2002, a satellite called INTEGRAL was launched by the European Space Agency with an instrument on board to detect and measure gamma rays from space. Four years later, it yielded some intriguing data: An unusually high number of gamma-ray photons from the galactic center carried the same energy—a particular, significant energy—and nobody could figure out why. The energy is 511 keV (kilo electron volts), and it happens to be the exact rest-mass energy of the positron, the electron anti-particle, which emits a 511 keV photon when it annihilates with an electron. The gamma rays, then, are a telltale sign of positrons in the galactic center. Where those positrons come from, however, is not so clear. At one point, scientists thought the positrons might originate as electron-positron pairs often referred to as positronium, an “element” that exists for a very short time before the electron and positron annihilate. For positronium to be the source of the gamma rays, there would have to be lots of it, but the usual positron sources, such as black holes and supernovae, don’t emit enough of them.”Theorists have thought that the 511 keV line might be from dark matter annihilation located at the center of our galaxy, but all the well known standard dark-matter candidates, such as the lightest super-particle, could not fit the data,” said astrophysicist Seong Chan Park to PhysOrg.com.Park and colleagues Ji-Haeng Huh, Jihn E. Kim, and Jong-Chul Park are researchers at Seoul National University in Korea, and the group recently proposed an explanation that involves a new particle. The group suggests that the positrons come from a “millicharged fermion,” a very lightweight particle with a tiny electric charge. The suggestion isn’t groundbreaking, as many physicists think that there may be some new physics—a new particle, specifically—underlying the gamma-ray production.”Most preferred interpretations of the 511 keV gamma rays involve the introduction of new particles, and a millicharged fermion has been proposed before, as far back as 20 years ago, as a dark-matter candidate.” said Park. “But in this work we have handled the urgent problem of interpreting the 511 keV anomaly using millicharge fermions, within certain physical constraints.”The proposed particle can produce positrons, which would emit 511 keV gamma-ray photons by decaying into positrons and electrons, which would annihilate and emit the photons. Alternatively, it could annihilate with its own antiparticle to yield an electron and positron that would then annihilate. The millicharged fermion, if it exists, would have escaped detection at collider experiments because its electric charge is so minute, say Park and his colleagues. They also suggest the particle as a dark-matter candidate, possibly making up 10 percent of the dark matter in the universe.”In the beginning, we worried if the idea of ‘millicharged’ dark matter might be inconsistent with any existing experimental data,” says Park. “As it turns out, that it is not the case and there is room to fit all of them, which is interesting.”This research is described in the June 3, 2008, online edition of Physical Review D.Citation: Phys. Downloading case to have 23000 defendants

first_img © 2010 PhysOrg.com (PhysOrg.com) — How many of you remember the film The Expendables? It was an action flick, featuring some of the biggest names in blowing things up, and soon it will be known as the film that has created the largest illegal-BitTorrent-downloading case in U.S. history. Stolen ‘X-Men’ flick leaps onto Internet A federal judge recently gave the U.S. Copyright Group the right to subpoena the records of Internet service providers in order to see who downloaded the movie illegally. So, while 23,000 is the current expected number of defendants that number may increase by leaps and bounds as more downloads are found. When an ISP gets a subpoena they will generally tell the account holder that their subscriber information is being shared with the Copyright Group, pursuant to their investigations. So, if you are part of this suit, you will likely find out sooner rather than later. This is not the Copyright Groups only attempt to take legal action against bit torrents. One the whole, this group is taking legal action against roughly 140,000 BitTorrent downloaders, primarily for downloading B-movies and pornography. Eventually, these kinds of suits will become a bigger revenue stream than the films sales themselves. Under the current U.S. copyright law damages of up to $150,000 per infringement can be obtained. For a film that only grossed $103,068,524 domestic, if this level of damages were paid, the dollar figure would well out pace film sales. With subpoenas are expected to go out this week, one has to wonder if this is not a good time to not only forget about the bit torrenting, but also about feature films altogether. After all, if these users had wanted the film that badly, they could have bought it for roughly $20 or rented it for $6, and none of them chose to do so. That may speak to the quality of the film, as much as the ethics of the fans. Image credit: Chaapscenter_img Explore further This document is subject to copyright. Research group suggests Chicxulub crater may have been caused by binary asteroids

first_img Binary asteroids are not wholly uncommon – space scientists estimate that as many as 15 percent of those observable are binaries. This observation has caused scientists problems though, due to the dearth of evidence of binaries striking the Earth – as few as 2 to 4 percent. In this new research, the team, led by Katarina Miljkovic, suggests that many of the craters evident on the surface of the Earth, and believed to have been caused by a single asteroid, may in fact have been caused by binaries. They say that a binary could cause just one crater if the two asteroids were close enough together when they struck. They suggest such craters would likely have a peanut shape, or have one side distorted. The team came to these conclusions after building computer simulations that showed asteroids hitting the earth. Some of the craters that resulted were oblong, or irregularly shaped, which they say, means the same could be true of real craters here on Earth. They point to Chicxulub as one such example, which many scientists believe is the scar left behind by an asteroid strike so violent it caused the demise of the dinosaurs. They note that the crater has some asymmetries that could be explained by a binary strike. If that were the case, they further suggest it likely that the combined size of the asteroid would have been roughly the same as the calculated size of a single entity – namely a combined diameter of 7 to 10 km. The crater left behind has a diameter of approximately 180 km, which means, the researchers say, that twin asteroids could have been as far apart as 80 km and still produced a single crater. The researchers suggest scientists will have to take a new look at other existing craters to try to determine if they too are possibly the result of binary strikes and if so, recalculate their number. Likewise, other scientists might also begin to ponder the doubly hard problem of preventing future binaries from striking the planet. Journal information: Earth and Planetary Science Letters Example of overlapping craters most likely created in close binary asteroid impacts: (a–b) elliptical, (c) peanut shaped, (d) tear-drop shaped and (e–f) elliptical with a lip, identified using THEMIS database (Christensen et al., 2010). However, the observed number of plausible doublet craters is 2–4% on Earth and 2–3% on Mars. This discrepancy between the percentage of binary asteroids and doublets on Earth and Mars may imply that not all binary systems form a clearly distinguishable doublet crater owing to insufficient separation between the binary components at the point of impact. We simulate the crater morphology formed in close binary asteroid impacts in a planetary environment and the range of possible crater morphologies includes: single (circular or elliptical) craters, overlapping (tear-drop or peanut shaped) craters, as well as clearly distinct, doublet craters. While the majority of binary asteroids impacting Earth or Mars should form a single, circular crater, about one in four are expected to form elongated or overlapping impact craters and one in six are expected to be doublets. This implies that doublets are formed in approximately 2% of all asteroid impacts on Earth and that elongated or overlapping binary impact craters are under-represented in the terrestrial crater record. The classification of a complete range of binary asteroid impact crater structures provides a template for binary asteroid impact crater morphologies, which can help in identifying planetary surface features observed by remote sensing. (Phys.org)—A team of researchers from the U.K. and Australia has published a paper in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters, suggesting that the crater Chicxulub, off the coast of Mexico, may have come about due to the impact of binary asteroids (those that travel in pairs), rather than just a single one. The crater is thought by many scientists to be evidence of an asteroid strike that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. This document is subject to copyright. He has done it in just 4.22 seconds. The achievement was recorded at an event held in Melbourne called Cube for Cambodia. Don’t blink now: Robot does speed cube puzzle solution in 0.38 seconds © 2018 Phys.org The Rubik’s cube was created in 1974 by a Hungarian man named Ernő Rubik, and it gained international notoriety in 1980 when it was licensed and produced by the Ideal Toy Corporation. It has since become one of the most well-known toys and puzzles in the world. The 3x3x3 cube has stickers affixed to each face of a given color. Initially, the faces of each side of the cube are all the same color. Twisting and turning the cube jumbles the colors in a random assortment. Solving the puzzle involves restoring each face to a single color.Despite his young age, Zemdegs has been working with the Rubik’s Cube for some time. He has told the media that he got his first one at age 12, just a decade ago. He claims to have learned how to solve the puzzle faster by watching others giving tips on YouTube. He has consistently broken the world’s record for solving the puzzle—in breaking the record this time, he broke his own record of 5.8 seconds. The action in Melbourne was taped and posted to YouTube—Zemdegs can be seen preparing his cube, then solving it. The action is almost surreal, as if watching a robot in a sci-fi movie. Notably, he also holds other Rubik’s Cube records—the average time taken to solve five of the puzzles, for example, at 5.8 seconds. He is, quite naturally, a star in the speedcubing world—he has over 300,000 followers on YouTube and 90,000 Facebook users following his postings. In speaking with the press at prior events, Zemdegs has maintained that he doesn’t believe his prowess with the Cube suggests he has above-average intelligence. Instead, he has suggested it is more of matter of studying techniques and doing it a lot. He notes that after a while, it sort of becomes intuitive.last_img read more

Astronomers observe the awakening of a BeXray binary

first_img Be/X-ray binaries (Be/XRBs) consist of Be stars and, usually, neutron stars, including pulsars. Observations have found that most of these systems showcase weak persistent X-ray emission that is interrupted by outbursts lasting several weeks.Discovered in 1977, A0538−66 is a Be/XRB system located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Many of the binary’s properties make it remarkable. For instance, it hosts one of the fastest spinning pulsars know to date—with a period of only 69 milliseconds. It has also one of the shortest orbital periods (about 16.64 days) and one of the highest eccentricities (approximately 0.72) among the Be/XRBs so far identified.During the first years after its discovery, A0538−66 was observed to emit bright X-ray outbursts with peak luminosity reaching even duodecillion erg/s. Afterward, the source entered a quiescent period during which its luminosity varied from 5.0 decillion to 40 undecillion erg/s.Now, a team of astronomers led by Lorenzo Ducci of Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, Germany, reports that A0538−66 is once again active. Observations of this binary conducted last year with the use of XMM-Newton, show that it is emitting bright X-ray outbursts.”In 2018, we carried out XMM-Newton observations of A0538−66 during three consecutive orbits when the pulsar was close to periastron. In the first two observations, we discovered a remarkable variability, with flares of typical durations between two to 50 seconds and peak luminosities up to 400 undecillion erg/s (0.2−10 keV),” the astronomers wrote in the paper.According to the paper, the flares were absent when the source was observed for the third time in 2018, and its luminosity was measured to be about 20 decillion erg/s. Between the two outbursts, the luminosity was found to be about 10 times higher. The astronomers emphasized how powerful and fast the two observed outbursts were. They noted that such fast flaring activity has never been observed in A0538−66, or most probably any other known Be/XRB.Pondering the possible explanation for such peculiar flaring activity, the researchers point to transitions between the accretion and supersonic propeller regimes. However, although they find this scenario the most plausible, they do not exclude any other hypotheses at the moment. “Although other explanations for the observed variability cannot be excluded, we speculate that the strong and rapid flares occur because the source was accreting from a spherically symmetric flow, not mediated by an accretion disk. In these conditions, an atmosphere can form above the NS [neutron star] magnetosphere, and flares might be produced by rapid changes between the accretion and supersonic propeller regime,” the authors of the paper concluded. They added that more studies of spectral properties of A0538−66, focused at higher energies, could help verify the possible scenarios. © 2019 Science X Network XMM-Newton spectra of A0538−66 during the three luminosity levels, fitted with two absorbed power laws (plus a Gaussian line for the intermediate and high luminosity levels). Using ESA’s XMM-Newton space telescope, astronomers have spotted bright X-ray outbursts emitted by a Be/X-ray binary known as A0538−66. 50 years after Apollo conspiracy theorists are still howling at the moon

first_imgThe moon is having a star turn. This summer will mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, and the Trump administration has ordered NASA to put astronauts back on the moon by 2024. None of this, however, will probably change the minds of people who live in a parallel belief universe where NASA faked the Apollo moon landings. The evidence that the moon landings were real is exactly what a conspiracist would expect to be manufactured by an agency committed to hoodwinking the public. This is the eternal conundrum for debunkers. Read the whole story: The Washington Post In response to a query from The Washington Post, NASA spokesman Allard Beutel issued a statement saying there is “a significant amount of evidence to support NASA landed 12 astronauts on the Moon from 1969-1972,” and specified some of that evidence: NASA has “842 pounds of astronaut-collected Moon rocks studied by scientists worldwide for decades; you can still bounce Earth-based lasers off the retroreflector mirrors placed on the lunar surface by the Apollo astronauts; NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter imaged the landing sites in 2011 . . . ” Polls show that about 5 or 6 percent of the public subscribes to the moon-hoax theory, former NASA chief historian Roger Launius said. That is a modest number, but these folks showed up reliably whenever Launius gave a lecture on the topic: “They’re very vocal — and they love to confront you.” And so on. But it’s a tough situation for NASA. The moon hoax isaclassic conspiracy theory — elaborate, oddly durable, requiring the existence of malevolent actors with a secret agenda. The moon-fakers are allegedly so competent they can fool the whole world (but not so competent that they can actually put humans on the moon). Researchers suggest conspiracy theories are spreading more easily in today’s information universe, with the Internet functioning as a superconductor. A growing science of conspiracism seeks to understand who these people are, why they embrace such ideas, and whether there is anything that can dislodge a really magnetic conspiracy theory from the mind of a true believer. As NASA celebrates Apollo 11, the space agency must decide whether, and how, to respond to the moon-hoax conspiracy theory.last_img read more

Drishyam is for todays audience

first_imgDrishyam released this Friday. How do you feel?(Cuts in with a smile) This is not my first film! But I’m curious to know how the audience will receive it. The audience has changed and their tastes are no longer what they were. They are looking for a change and are eager to watch content driven films. Drishyam is the kind of film that today’s audience is looking for.A change in the audience is a good sign for the industry, isn’t it?Yes. But that happens once in three or four years. I have been around for so many years and I’ve seen our audience evolving. And not just the audience but us filmmakers too. We’ve been trying to outdo ourselves with each movie that we make. What used to work with the audience doesn’t work now. We also need to respect the evolving audience and serve them what they want. That’s Drishyam! Also Read – A fresh blend of fameYou’re doing a film like this after a very long time, where your fans will not see you bashing up a villain.Yes, I agree but they won’t be disappointed. I may not use my fists in the film but, eventually, it is my character that defeats everyone. I use my intelligence to play a cat-and-mouse with everyone in the film. The movie keeps you on your toes because of the character I play.Don’t you think your audience will miss watching their hero?Absolutely NOT! What’s the definition of ‘hero’? A hero saves his lady love, his family, his friends and people, and that’s what I am doing in Drishyam. I play a regular guy who emerges as a hero in the end. His only aim in the film is to safeguard his family. My character is a very simple guy who adores his family. His universe comprises his work and his family, and when his family is in trouble, he takes charge and eventually saves them. Now that’s what a hero does, either on screen on in real life. And that’s the USP of the film. So, from the kids to the young generation to older people, everyone will relate to my character in the film. That’s where the triumph of the screenplay lies. Also Read – Martin Freeman confirms ‘Black Panther’ returnThe leading man in Drishyam is not weak; he is fighting the common man’s fight. The audience doesn’t accept Ajay Devgn playing a weak character. I have a certain image and it is very difficult to break that mould. But his style of fighting is very interesting. And everyone will fall in love with the character once he decides to fight for his family.Coming back to your previous question… Yes, I am doing cinema like this after a long time. It’s not that I didn’t want to do content-driven movies; it’s just that I wasn’t getting the right script. I would like to add that I was the one who acted in hardcore commercial movies but also worked in hard-hitting, content-driven movies like The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Naajayaz, Zakham or Company, and I even backed Dil Kya Kare. But everyone expects you to deliver a Rs 100-crore movie with every successive release.I know, whether we accept it or not, as stars, we are always under pressure to deliver. And this pressure is created by us and the media hype when we deliver a Rs 100-crore movie. Earlier, we used to celebrate silver and golden jubilees; now it’s the Rs 100-crore club. While such films don’t always open well, they pick up with word-of-mouth. I am not at all worried about the fate of Drishyam. I just want to ensure that the audience watch it. Every film has its own merits and limitations. We need to judge a film by its investment. Drishyam may not take a gigantic opening but neither will collections nosedive once the initial craze subsides. When a film like Drishyam comes along, you just know it has to be a part of your life!People often ask me why I don’t act in films like Zakhm any more or The Legend of Bhagat Singh. Now they are asking me ‘Why Drishyam?’ When I was doing successful commercial movies and also accepted films like Zakhm and The Legend of Bhagat Singh, they asked me the same question: ‘Why are you doing these movies?’ They received their answer when the movie released. The same thing happened on Friday. Everyone realised why I decided to do Drishyam. (Laughs)Why are the promotions of the film almost low key?Hype and publicity may work temporarily but content pays in the long run. When I decided to do Drishyam, I knew the kind of opening it would take. You see, when you get a script like Drishyam, all those box-office insecurities melt away because you know it will not get a great opening as it does not have masala, songs and the typical commercial elements that potboilers have. It’s a word-of-mouth film like Piku, which picked up after the third show. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Drishyam will do well from the first show. So there’s no need to go all out to promote the film. Also, since the film is an edge-of-the seat movie, we didn’t want to give out too many details. We want the audience to come to cinemas and enjoy the movie. Our promotions don’t reveal much but, at the same time, they are generating curiosity and reminding them that this movie will release on July 31. The whole idea was to tell the audience that after a hiatus, Ajay Devgn is doing a content-driven film like he has always been doing. I think we have managed to convey that. What kind of response are you receiving? You are from the trade… why don’t you tell me what the buzz around the film is like. As soon as the trailer released, everyone began looking forward to the film. And there’s a lot of curiosity among the audience since you’re doing this kind of cinema after a long time. Correct! Now that’s the response I too am getting. If I keep doing cinema like this, people won’t wait for my next. I need to serve up different movies to the audience. And since I’m doing a movie like this after a gap, there’s a hunger among the audience. I am told by the Viacom people that the response at their focus trial was great. There were people from all age groups and all of them loved the film. There was one screening in Delhi and one in Mumbai, and both received a tremendous response. I am sure the film will be appreciated and the audiences will love Drishyam but I want them to go in from the first day. After a long time, there is no anxiety arising out of the Friday pressure because we know that Drishyam may not take a great opening. But I am trying my best to make even that happen. If a film likeDrishyam takes a big opening, it could change the face of cinema because people will attempt better films on these lines.Since the film has already been made in the South, don’t you think there will be comparisons? We compare a film when it is not at par with the original. I wouldn’t say that Drishyam is much better than the original but it is definitely at par with the original. And whoever has seen the Malayalam version, will be more than entertained watching our movie. Those who have watched the film will like to watch our version for their sheer love of the original. And people who have not watched the original would watch it to experience this beautiful cinema called Drishyam. In a recent interview, Tabu said that her first successful film was with you, and now she’s working with you after a long time.(Laughs) I know she said that. She is an old friend. The film is a cat-and-mouse game between Tabu and me. I don’t know who thought of casting Tabu but it was a masterstroke. After watching the film I can say that no actor other than Tabu could have had carried this role the way she has. She’s fantastic in the film. Her performance is one of the key reasons the film is as entertaining as it is.last_img read more

NKDA to conduct fire audit in housing complexes shopping malls

first_imgKolkata: New Town Kolkata Development Agency (NKDA) has decided to conduct fire audit in all housing complexes and shopping malls in New Town. The decision has been taken following a major incident of fire where several shops had been gutted at a commercial complex in South Kolkata. NKDA will engage an agency which will visit the housing complexes and shopping malls to check the firefighting arrangements, condition of the fire extinguishers and whether fire drills are being carried out regularly or not. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedIt has often been found that the fire extinguishers do not work during an emergency. The agency will submit a report to NKDA regarding its findings. On getting the report, NKDA authorities will sit with the housing complex residents and shopping mall authorities to create awareness. There are many major housing complexes in New Town. There are shopping malls and offices complexes which are visited by thousands of people every day. The agency conducting the audit report will conduct an on the spot investigation in this regard as well. Senior officials of NKDA said they do not want to scare the residents, the visitors to the shopping malls or the persons attending offices, but it is absolutely necessary to maintain a proper firefighting system in these premises. It may be recalled that more than 40 people had died in a devastating fire that had broken out at Stephen Court in March 2010. In 2018, fire had broken out at several markets in the city. NKDA has also decided to conduct vaccination and sterilisation camps for stray dogs in New Town, in collaboration with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).last_img read more

first_imgPractising Hatha yoga – a combination of asanas, pranayam and meditation – along with mindfulness meditation daily for just 25 minutes can significantly improve brain function and energy levels, according to a new study. Hatha yoga is one of the most common styles of yoga practiced in Western countries. It involves physical postures and breathing exercises combined with meditation. Mindfulness mediation involves observing thoughts, emotions and body sensations with openness and acceptance. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfThe study found that practicing Hatha yoga or mindfulness meditation for a brief session per day can boost the brain’s executive functions, cognitive abilities linked to goal-directed behavior and the ability to control knee-jerk emotional responses, habitual thinking patterns and actions.”Hatha yoga and mindfulness meditation both focus the brain’s conscious processing power on a limited number of targets like breathing and posing, and also reduce processing of nonessential information,” said Peter Hall, associate professor at University of Waterloo in Canada. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsive”These two functions might have some positive carryover effect in the near-term following the session, such that people are able to focus more easily on what they choose to attend to in everyday life,” Hall said.Thirty-one study participants completed 25 minutes of Hatha yoga, 25 minutes of mindfulness meditation, and 25 minutes of quiet reading (a control task) in randomised order.Following both the yoga and meditation activities, participants performed significantly better on executive function tasks compared to the reading task. “This finding suggests that there may be something special about meditation – as opposed to the physical posing – that carries a lot of the cognitive benefits of yoga,” said Kimberley Luu, lead author of the study published in the journal Mindfulness. The study also found that mindfulness meditation and Hatha yoga were both effective for improving energy levels, but Hatha yoga had significantly more powerful effects than meditation alone.”There are a number of theories about why physical exercises like yoga improve energy levels and cognitive test performance,” said Luu.”These include the release of endorphins, increased blood flow to the brain, and reduced focus on ruminative thoughts.Though ultimately, it is still an open question,” she said.”Although the meditative aspect might be even more important than the physical posing for improving executive functions, there are additional benefits to Hatha yoga including improvements in flexibility and strength,” said Hall.”These benefits may make Hatha yoga superior to meditation alone, in terms of overall health benefits,” he said.Hatha refers to the physical practice of yoga, so any poses that involve reaching, bending, twisting, balancing or squeezing your body falls into this category. This physical practice is distinct from the breath work and meditation that are also part of a comprehensive yoga practice. Many Hatha poses improve your core strength – that’s the center of your body, consisting of the spine, abs and hips. A strong core keeps you functional and wards off injury; it also improves your performance in sports and fitness. Poses such as Boat, Plank and Downward-Facing dog strengthen your external obliques; Chair and Warrior I target your buttocks; and Chair and the half-lift improve the strength in your paraspinals, which are the muscles surrounding your spine and assist when you twist and bend. When practiced regularly, Hatha yoga poses improve multiple aspects important to physical fitness. As revealed in a study published in a 2001 issue of Preventive Cardiology, a minimum of two yoga classes attended per week for eight weeks improved oxygen uptake, muscular strength and endurance and joint mobility.last_img read more

First Chinese AC rake reaches Noapara trial run to take place in

first_imgKolkata: Kolkata Metro received its first foreign-made rake in the form of a Chinese AC rake that arrived at the Noapara maintenance base, the trail run of which would be done later this month. The Metro Railways authorities on Thursday officially put the rake on display at Noapara. Around 13 other rakes would soon come to the city. The other rakes would be sailed for Kolkata in various phases. The rake was being carried in two tiers of the vessel’s deck. After the cargo anchored at Kolkata Port, special cranes were engaged to lift the coaches and load them on to a container. The coaches were then assembled in the Port area to form the rake before it was taken to Noapara by a diesel engine. A Chinese company is manufacturing low-maintenance rakes for Kolkata Metro. Earlier, the Metro rakes used to come from the Integral Coach Factory in Perambur, near Chennai. Altogether, 14 Chinese rakes will replace the snag-prone old non-AC Metro rakes and will also help in reducing the burden on the existing ones that are plied in the North-South corridor. The new rakes will also be used in the expanded network of the Metro. It may also be mentioned here that the Noapara-Airport and Noapara-Baranagar-Dakshineswar lines are scheduled to be commissioned by next year. Also Read – Bose & Gandhi: More similar than apart, says Sugata BoseThe Chinese trains will be able to run at an average speed of 65 kmph, 10 kmph faster than the rakes that are in use. The new rakes will reduce energy consumption too. The doors will be 20 cm wider than the existing AC rakes, a senior Metro official said. There will be fire extinguishers installed in the coaches and also CCTVs installed inside. Metro officials could not confirm when the new rakes would start their commercial runs.last_img read more

Malda school to hold separate classes for boys and girls

first_imgKolkata: In a unique move, authorities of Girijasundari Co Educational High School in Malda have rationalized the routine allowing the girls and the boys to attend classes three days in a week separately after some boys were caught passing lewd remarks on their classmates. The assistant head master of the school said some boys recently passed lewd remarks on their classmates. There is shortage of space as the common room cannot accommodate all the students. Some outsiders enter the school and disturb the girls. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: Mamata”In view of the problem that has cropped up in school, we have decided to restructure the routine. Girls will attend the classes for three days and the boys during the remaining three days. We believe this is the only workable solution.” The decision has received severe criticism from educationists. Noted scholar Nrisingha Prasad Bhaduri said the decision taken by the school authorities is absurd and should be scrapped immediately. He said the school authorities will find it very difficult to complete the syllabus. Moreover, it will not resolve the problem. Instead the school authorities should call a meeting of the parents to address the problem. Also Read – Lightning kills 8, injures 16 in stateAnandadeb Mukherjee, former vice chancellor of Vidyasagar University said: ” Instead of resolving the issue it will further complicate the relation between the boys and the girls studying in the school. Steps should be taken by the school authorities to discuss the matter with the boys and it is the responsibility of the school authorities to ensure that the boys do not pass lewd remarks on their fellow classmates. Instead of addressing the problem, the school authorities are running away from it,” he maintained. The district inspector of schools when contacted said he would look into the matter. The decision has created confusion among a section of teachers who maintained that if this decision is implemented then it will be difficult for them to complete the syllabus.last_img read more

Raunaks journey to stardom

first_imgYouTube has become a major career option for people around the globe. You can come across a number of Youtube channels and their videos exploring different kinds of content – Food, Lifestyle, Comedy, and much more. One such channel known for its comic videos is ‘Aashqeen’ – run by Aashqeen himself .After becoming a Youtube sensation with his iconic videos like Inteqam, The Interview, Aashqeen meets Sapna, Never Judge Too Quickly among others, the Youtuber recently launched his own web series titled ‘Superstar: The Chantlaunda’. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfThe 3-episode series revolves around the journey of a commoner (Raunak). It delves deep into his life and shows Raunak’s struggle of becoming a popular Youtuber from a nobody, how he discovers his passion to make funny videos, from where he seeks motivation, how he manages to gather the resources to fulfill his dream and much more. Read what he has to share about the new series, Youtube career, challenges, and a lot more. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsive Is the series inspired by your personal life? What all phases of life/career have you added in it? Absolutely, it is. This story is a bit personal to me. However, it is not just related to my personal life, but also other YouTubers and people perusing the same career. I think this is going to be relatable for all the YouTubers who have struggled to achieve something in life As every other person is becoming famous with platforms like YouTube, TikTok, etc, how difficult is it to bring up something new for the audience? I agree that the competition is much more now. But not everyone is becoming famous. I believe they have some talent in them, which is why they are gaining popularity. Even if I talk about myself, I also struggle every day to showcase my talent, my creativity and come up with something unique for my channel. Good things never come easy, and even in this field, there are different types of struggles. The primary demand we all are trying to meet is that of ‘content’. Getting something out of the box is very important as with the increasing competition, we have to put in a lot of efforts. It is because there’s someone else who offers the same content to the audience. How is YouTube, TikTok, Instagram as a full-time career option? Speaking about the career option, I didn’t know because I didn’t plan it with that perspective. It was my inner voice which told me to walk on this path. As I continued, it started becoming fun and enjoyable. But even then, I wasn’t certain that it’ll be my career. Slowly as things settled, I thought to take this professionally. Today, if someone asks me about it as a career option, I would suggest them to start it in a laid back manner. If they expect to enjoy fandom from the first video itself, it might not always work. Everything takes times, so don’t expect a lot. How does it feel to be famous? Does the stardom hamper your personal life in any way? It actually feels great when people recognise you and your work and come to congratulate for the same. Even in personal life, I think people treat me in a better way. Obviously, there is a certain downside to it too. Sometimes, it becomes problematic during the shoot – people interrupt to meet. Are you planning any collaborations? I have done a few collaborations with in the past. Even in the latest series, you can see one major YouTuber. For the future, I am working out on some collaborations.last_img read more

How did the Pentagon get its Iconic Shape

first_imgThe iconic Pentagon is considered to be the largest office building in the world, and certainly the largest Ministry of Defense building, covering more than 6,500,000 sq ft (600,000 m2). But how did the seat of the U.S. Defense Department get its unusual shape? Well, the story of its construction goes back to 1941, to the very eve of American involvement in WWII. As the Nazi threat became imminent, a necessity to put the entire Defense Department into a single building became a top priority.Ariel view of the US Pentagon buildingHaving been previously headquartered in the temporary Munitions Building, the Defense Department was desperate for a permanent base from which it could coordinate its operations due to the ensuing threat, both from Europe and Japan. In addition to this, the Defense Department was pretty much spread across dozens of civilian buildings in the National Mall and Memorial Parks area.Pentagon from aboveJust after Hitler initiated his invasion of the USSR, military leadership came up with a solution for a centralized office building that would enable them to act most effectively.1945 map of the Pentagon road network, including present-day State Route 27 and part of the Shirley Highway, as well as the Main Navy and Munitions Buildings near the Lincoln Memorial.Army construction chief, Brig. Gen. Brehon Burke Somervell was in charge of planning for the new building, as it was soon determined that it should be built on the Virginian side of the Potomac River, in Arlington County.Conditions determined that the building should not be more than four stories tall to prevent the obstruction of the view of Washington, D.C. The decision to build a low-rise headquarters was also due to the limited availability of steel, which was one of the main materials used by the military.Southwesterly view (1998) with the Potomac River and Washington Monument in background. At first, it was planned to start the construction on the site of the former Department of Agriculture’s Arlington Experimental Farm, and the Arlington Cemetery. The new War Department was intended to adopt the foundations of the farm, which was built in the shape of an asymmetrical pentagon. Everyone agreed that the shape was odd ― to say the least ― but it fit perfectly.Related Video: American Tanks move in to secure ridges on Hill 609:That was how a rough sketch of what we know today as the center of U.S. military might was first made. The sketch turned to an architectural plan, all in a course of several weeks in July 1941.View from northwest with construction underway, July 1942Intended to house around 40,000 employees, it was clear from the start that this ugly duckling was to be one of the American government’s most ambitious projects. However, the Arlington Experimental Farm lot was soon deemed unsuitable due to aesthetic reasons. A commission was formed, led by Gilmore D. Clarke, a respected civil engineer and landscape architect, who strongly opposed the idea of erecting the Defense Department building next to the cemetery which held the grave of Pierre L’Enfant, the architect who developed the urban plan on which the city of Washington is based.Military police keep back Vietnam War protesters during their sit-in on October 21, 1967, at the mall entrance to the Pentagon. In his letter to the Senate, Clarke made a bold statement which shook the Defense Department plan to the ground:“It is inconceivable that this outrage could be perpetrated in this period of the history of the development of this City, a city held in the highest esteem by every citizen who visits it.”As the tensions grew higher between military and civil engineers, President Roosevelt decided to make a compromise. The PentagonThe location of the building was transferred to the nearby Hoover Field ― an early Washington airstrip, which was replaced by the Washington National Airport in 1941.While this left room to change the unusual shape of the building into a more standard, rectangular format, there was little time to revise the plans, and only minor adjustments concerning the asymmetrical shape of the compound were made.On September 11, 1941, the construction work commenced. The project would be finished in January 1943, almost a year after the United States officially declared war against the Axis Powers. The PentagonDue to its shape, the building soon became known as “The Pentagon” ― a word which is to this day considered synonymous with the American Armed Forces.Truth be told, Roosevelt himself became fond of the odd shape of the building and although there was little space for change, he personally didn’t mind.Read another story from us: The Peculiar Frenchman who Designed Washington D.C.According to a 2007 Washington Post article regarding the issue, Roosevelt stated that he liked the Pentagon  “because nothing like it has ever been done that way before”.last_img read more

Colins 2018 NFL Mock Draft 20

first_imgAfter the NFL Scouting Combine, and news that Denver is likely out of the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes, Colin had to go back in the lab and re-mock his first mock draft based on the most recent information. His 2.0 Top 10 changes considerably because Denver looks like they’ll be pursuing a QB with the 5th pick. Saquon Barkley’s impressive combine performance also has him moving up.Here’s how Colin sees the top of the draft playing out, 2.0:Browns: Sam Darnold, QB, USC – No change here, the Browns stick  with Sam Darnold. He’s got a body that can withstand the punishment of the AFC North, loves football, and is just scratching the surface of his overall potential. Saquon Barkley’s impressive combine performance has Browns fans clamoring to make him the pick here. Don’t overthink this Cleveland.(1.0 – Sam Darnold, QB, USC)Non mais quelle fin de match ! QB Sam Darnold pour WR Deontay Burnett. TD Trojans !USC 24, Texas 17 OTpic.twitter.com/R1jDYdnOhe— TBP College Football (@thebluepennant) September 17, 2017 7. Bucs: Quenton Nelson, OG, Notre Dame –  No change here. Tampa needs offensive line help, and Nelson is a pencil in Day 1 starter, and a nastier version of Zach Martin. Nelson is a huge protection upgrade for Jameis Winston and will be a beast in the run game. He could be the best overall player in the draft.Quenton Nelson (LG #56) is an elite prospect. Blocks like this are why 😳 pic.twitter.com/JQVRte6XM8— J.R. (@JReidDraftScout) January 29, 2018(1.0-Quenton Nelson, OG, ND) 8. Bears: Denzel Ward, DB, Ohio State – Ward put on a show at the combine with a 4.32 40-yard dash, and is the best cover corner in the draft. He has the potential to have an immediate impact like fellow Buckeye Marshon Lattimore did with the Saints. They can add offense later.Does Denzel Ward get docked for doing this? pic.twitter.com/MwXUEY6Fk7— Marcus Chai (@OaklandScout) February 1, 2018(1.0 – Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M) Advertisement 5. Broncos: Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA – With recent reports indicating that the Broncos aren’t among the finalists for Kirk Cousins, Denver shifts their focus to finding a franchise quarterback. While some teams might be turned off by Rosen’s opinionated nature, he’s very similar to John Elway when he cam out of Stanford. After living through two seasons in QB purgatory, Elway gets the most polished quarterback in the draft to revive Denver’s offense.(1.0 – Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama)“The Legend of Josh Rosen.”UCLA comes back to defeat Texas A&M in dramatic fashion! via @CFBONFOX pic.twitter.com/qBVaCZHcrp— FOX Sports (@FOXSports) September 4, 2017 3. Colts: Bradley Chubb, DE, N.C. State – With Saquon Barkley off the board, the Colts grab freakish pass rusher Bradley Chubb to build their weak defensive core. Chubb would give them their first stud pass rusher since Dwight Freeney. GM Chris Ballard gets a cornerstone piece as he continues to rebuild the roster.(1.0 – Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State)Whew. Bradley Chubb speed rush 🔥🔥🔥 pic.twitter.com/hQSudmbtD0— Billy Marshall (@BillyM_91) February 18, 2018 6. Jets: Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama – Based on recent reports, Colin thinks the Jets will land Kirk Cousins in free agency and add an offensive weapon with Ridley to support their investment. Cousins needs to be surrounded by talent to succeed. Ridley gives him an explosive weapon to pair with a decent receiving corps. It’s a good fit.(1.0 – Bradley Chubb, DE, N.C. State)Quick highlights for CALVIN RIDLEY (@CalvinRidley1) who’s expected by most to be the 1st wide receiver selected in this year’s #NFLDraft pic.twitter.com/oYadWGBE8i— PirateLife Football (@PirateLifeFF) February 20, 2018center_img 4. Browns (From Houston): Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama – The Browns second first round pick remains unchanged. Bama DB Minkah Fitzpatrick is still the pick, and the player with the least bust potential in the draft. Cleveland gets an attitude changing anchor and transformative leadership. Fitzpatrick’s solid combine performance only confirmed that he can be a versatile impact player in the NFL(1.0- Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama)Minkah is a God. pic.twitter.com/2Ul4FAaqqN— The Mick Nartin™ (@themicknartin) February 11, 2018 10. Raiders: Marcus Davenport, DE, Texas-San Antonio – Davenport is a relatively unknown pass rusher with limitless athletic ability, and Jon Gruden needs defensive help. This will be seen as a reach by some, but Davenport dominated the competition at the Senior Bowl and plays angry. Khalil Mack was unknown, too.(1.0 – Marcus Davenport, DE, Texas San-Antonio)Wanna see some hands and nuanced footwork, check out Marcus Davenport here. Makes it seem like such an easy sack, but if you watch how well he sets up the tackle you see why pic.twitter.com/0wO8LbDvD9— Coach Coker (@filmstudybuddy) February 6, 2018 Here’s Colin to run it down:1. Browns – Sam Darnold2. Giants – Saquon Barkley3. Colts – Bradley Chubb4. Browns – Minkah Fitzpatrick5. Broncos – Josh Rosen@ColinCowherd unveils his post-#NFLCombine Mock Draft 2.0 pic.twitter.com/vPVpjPRHeB— Herd w/Colin Cowherd (@TheHerd) March 6, 2018 2. Giants: Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State – Coming off a strong combine, Barkley’s stock continues to rise. Colin thinks Giants ownership is gun shy about drafting a QB with the second overall pick because of the uproar after Eli Manning’s benching last year. Barkley gives them their best running back since Tiki Barber, and a legitimate home run hitter to pair with Odell Beckham.(1.0 – Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA) 9. Bills (From Niners): Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming – With Minkah Fitzpatrick, Denzel Ward and Quenton Nelson off the board, John Lynch decides to trade down and Buffalo slides into the 9 slot to grab Josh Allen. Tyrod Taylor clearly isn’t the answer, and Allen’s size and huge arm make him a perfect fit for the harsh elements in the second half of the season. Allen isn’t a finished product and has a bigger than average bust potential, but you can’t deny his physical tools.(1.0 – Niners: Denzel Ward, CB, Ohio State)Amazing stuff from Josh Allen at the NFL Combine. Has looked the best out of the first group. Baker, Rudolph and Rosen are in the second group. pic.twitter.com/sjxQbHeEor— Buffalo Sports Talk (@BUFSportsTalk) March 3, 2018last_img read more

Why Googles New Chromebook Wont Replace Your Laptop or Tablet

first_img 5 min read November 4, 2012 This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. This story originally appeared on Business Insider Enroll Now for Free Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now In a world full of tablets, netbooks, and Ultrabooks, Google is dipping its hand into almost every industry and seeing what sticks. The search giant recently released a refreshed version of its Samsung-made Chromebook laptop. The new Chromebook costs just $249 and runs on the same low-cost processors many Android tablets and the iPad use.But the Chromebook doesn’t function like a laptop. It feels more like a $249 web browser. If you’re OK with dishing out that much to compute only within Google’s Chrome ecosystem, then the Chromebook makes a solid secondary device. But it’s not going to replace your primary machine.Samsung lightened up this new Chromebook and it weighs a half a pound less than the previous Chromebook, at 2.42 pounds. Other key specs include an 11.6-inch anti-glare screen, a 0.7-inch thick body, 6.5 hours of battery life, Bluetooth 3.0 and 100 GB of free storage for two years in Google’s Drive storage service. So what exactly is the Chromebook? The idea behind the Chromebook is to run just about everything within the Chrome browser, with Google services covering your documents, email, calendar, etc. But unlike normal laptops, there’s no file management system.Related: Apple’s iPad Mini UnboxedIt’s not a laptop. It’s not a tablet. It’s a shell that houses a web browser. That’s it.While Google added more of a “desktop-like” feel to the Chromebook’s operating system with a home screen of icons that launch web apps in the browser, it’s simply a facade. There is no way to effectively manage files that aren’t Internet-based. If you don’t have an Internet connection, you’re extremely limited in what you can do.We reviewed the previous iteration of the Chromebook this past summer and enjoyed the experience but thought that the device really fell short because of a lack of 3G/LTE. To Samsung’s credit the revamped Chromebook now features 3G connectivity, but this data connection comes at a $80 premium. The 3G only includes 100 MB per month for 2 years via Verizon Wireless, which admittedly isn’t enough. If you want more you’ll have to pick one of the “flexible” pricing plans for additional mobile service. There is also a more powerful version, Chromebook 550, which is a beefed up version of the less expensive Chromebook that retails for $449 and uses an Intel Core processor to get you six hours of battery life. Some positives:• Google’s new Chromebook is a lot sleeker. The OS is snappier too, booting up in just 10 seconds.• Users have access to Google’s Chrome Web Store. This is really where you can personalize the device and make it unique. The Chrome Store is full of thousands of apps, extensions, and themes.• The device is shareable, allowing you to create your own user account and others for family and friends. Google says the benefit of multiple accounts is that, “everyone has their own files, apps and settings, and you never have to worry about anything getting messed up by someone else.”• Chromebooks can automatically update themselves, so you don’t have to be bothered with staying current. Users also don’t have to worry about viruses and malware.• The Chromebooks automatically back themselves up too so you never have to worry about losing your work.Related: 11 Quick Tricks You Need To Learn Before Upgrading To Windows 8But there are some major cons:• Mobile connectivity is still missing from the cheapest Chromebook.• The problem with the Chromebook is that it’s a device completely dependent on an internet connection. When you don’t have the Internet, you can’t really do anything.• Yes, there are offline documents, offline Gmail, and you can play media you’ve already downloaded, but these features work best on the internet and without a connection there is really little to do.• The Chromebook is not for a power user. It’s for a consumer who wants to get things done and enjoy the web without all the extras most computers come with. It’s dead simple to go online, read email, download Chrome Store apps, and create a document. If you want to do anything beyond that, you’re better off with a regular Windows or Mac laptop. What about the thousands of apps available for the device?Apps work just like they do in the free Chrome browser on your primary PC. Chrome Apps download from the web and open in separate tabs inside your browser. The Chrome Store has plenty of apps for offline use, which helps. If only the Chromebook would run Android apps, then we might have a real winner.Should you buy it?Overall, the Chromebook still feels like it doesn’t have a place in the world. If you’re looking for an ultra-portable device to simply browse the web and enjoy media, you’re probably better off getting an iPad or similar tablet. But if you’re a Google addict and require a keyboard, then the Chromebook may be for you.Related: Google Unveils A New Way To Compose In Gmaillast_img read more

Pebble Is Launching a New Smartwatch Today on Kickstarter

first_img Register Now » Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. If you take a visit to crowdfunding site Kickstarter today you’ll see a familiar company there: Pebble. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company is back on Kickstarter to announce its new smartwatch called the Pebble Time. At first you’ll notice that Pebble Time has a different look than the original Pebble or Pebble Steel. It comes with a scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass front cover and a stainless steel bezel around the frame. It also is about 20 percent slimmer than the original Pebble, co-founder Eric Migicovsky tells Entrepreneur.Pebble Time comes in black, white and red versions.Related: Pebble Gets Even Smarter, Rolls Out Interactive Notifications for Android UsersFeatures-wise, two things stand out on the Pebble Time. First is the color e-paper display. Until now, Pebble smartwatches featured black and white e-paper displays. Even with the addition of color, though, Pebble Time will still have a five- to seven-day battery life, Migicovsky says.Another big addition is the microphone, allowing Pebble Time owners to speak responses to messages directly over the smartwatch. A “voice note” tool also allows people to record short audio notes and reminders.”These features were designed for busy people who want to be able to respond to messages without taking out their smartphone,” Migicovsky says. Here’s a look at the Pebble Time video on Kickstarter:A departure from the previous models, Pebble Time comes as smartwatches from companies like LG and Samsung come with a bevvy of smartphone-like features, like touchscreens, cameras and speakers. While the devices sacrifice battery life for features like these, Pebble has the competition in mind, especially with the launch of the Apple Watch in the near future.Related: Pebble Lowers Prices, Expands Retail Presence and Adds New Activity-Tracking FeaturesAn all-new operating systemIn addition to the hardware, Pebble also is unveiling some significant software changes. A new operating system called Timeline is launching today. Instead of a person opening individual apps to get information — such as weather or traffic or sports scores — the new OS will extract relevant information from those apps and deliver it to Pebble users in the format of a personal timeline, Migicovsky says.”We think we’ve made a breakthrough that will help shift the way people interact with smartwatches,” he says. “It brings all the information you need to know to your screen with just one click.”In addition to Pebble Time, the new Timeline OS will become available to owners of the original Pebble as well as Pebble Steel. Shipping in May, the Pebble Time smartwatch will retail for $199. People who are interested can place an order now via Kickstarter for $159. In addition to getting the word out, Pebble is hoping the Kickstarter campaign will help raise at least $500,000.Pebble, of course, launched on Kickstarter in 2012. It kicked off the current smartwatch wave, blowing past its $100,000 goal and pulling in more than $10 million from nearly 69,000 backers. As of late last year, the company had sold more than 1 million smartwatches.Related: Why Wearable Tech Isn’t the Next Big Thing — Yetcenter_img February 24, 2015 3 min readlast_img read more
